I've been absent from Social Media for the past 6

I've been absent from Social Media for the past 6 months or so. It was a much needed intentional break. I needed to get away from it, both personally and professionally.

I am so grateful to everyone who reached out to ask if everything was ok - it was, I just needed some time to rethink social media in general. I wanted to consider how to use it to help you better, and create a fab plan of action so my socials aren't just a 'catalogue' of dogs!

But, now I'm back - stronger than ever, feeling the benefit of my time away, and very much looking forward to creating useful posts for you, and helping the wider dog-guardian community.

I thought I'd hop on to share a few facts about my dog!

He is a sable double coated dog, and when his hair falls a certain way he bears a striking resemblance to Boris Johnson!

His favourite toy (apart from me!) is a large carboard box, filled with packing paper. I pop tiny little bits of JR Pate in it for him to find - and sometimes I also hide larger Jackpot Treats in there too! He loves it.

His favourite treats are the JR Pate. He likes it sprinkled in his treat box, or stuffed in a Kong or other treat toy, hidden around the house - anywhere!

He also loves the big meaty bones from @pynesof

Are you worried about the safety of you and your dog on walks?

There are so many risks about at the moment - everyday, there are reports of dogs (and people) being attacked, attempted dog thefts, lost dogs and more.

It's very worrying to me too, so I thought I'd try to help!

During my many years of working with dogs, I've also been lucky enough to work with the Police and National animal welfare institutions on issues of dog law, welfare and safety. I'd like to share my experiences to help YOU so I'm offering FREE Dog Walker Safety walks.

Did you know we don't only train our dogs, but that they train us too? 😆

I trained my boy to ring some bells each time he wants to go outside. He learned that skill very quickly! Now, he rings the bells when he wants to go out, when he wants the door open so that he can sit and sniff the fresh air - and now he's started to ring the bell when he would like some food, because his food bowls are near the back door!

It got me thinking - who is training who here? He knows that I will come to the back door when the bells are rung, and he is starting to shape MY behaviour when I get there!

There is a solution - I can either move his food bowls from the door, or I can slowly (going back to basics) move the bells away from the door, so he has to go somewhere else to ring them. I'll make it easy for him, and set HIM up for success by moving his food bowls first.

Every day, I love my boy more and more.

He is such a chilled out chap, happy to come to work with me or equally content to stay home and snooze. To be honest, given the choice, he'd stay in bed until 10am!

I love that he is so relaxed, well adjusted and independent. Yes, a lot of it is down to our training, but it's also part of his personality.

He also loves kisses. I mean, seriously loves kisses. I sometimes get them at 5am, if he forgot to give me enough kisses the night before. I don't love that so much 😆

This used to be me, back when I worked 9-5 in an office.

Now, I work 7am to 7pm, saving my weekends for Big Adventure Walks, one to one training, studying, washing towels, deep cleaning the van, looking at my schedule for the upcoming week, doing admin, accounts and maybe taking a bit of time out for me. It's hard work, but I love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

𝐌𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐛. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐦𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Well, today took an unexpected turn!

While walking an on-lead dog, an out of control dog (with no human in sight) began to bother other dogs in the area before spotting me and the dog I was walking. He ran straight into us, at full speed, from about 100 feet away. His intentions were clear - and they were not friendly!

Contact was made, but thankfully I was able to separate and gain control of the aggressor. I am so grateful for the Handling Dangerous Dogs training I have done over the years. I always hoped I'd never have to use it, but it came in very handy today. 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑡, 𝐼 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑗𝑢𝑟𝑦 (𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑔𝑠) 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟.

The owner finally showed up. After checking the dog for injuries (there were none) I then turned to ask if the other dog was ok, only to find that the owner had left - a lot faster than she arrived!

After getting the dog safely home, making sure that he wasn't stressed by the event (he wasn't - he was still keen to have his after-walk treats!) I finally acknowledged the pain I was in, and that I was unable to continue my walks due to back spasms.

Setting aside my injuries, medical expenses & loss of income, my primary concern is the potential for the same irresponsible 'owner' to allow the dog to injure other dogs.

A responsible dog owner, once aware that their dog has no recall and behavioural issues should ideally take steps to help by walking them on a lead and seek professional advice. This will not only prevent harm to other dogs, but will minimise the risk of a complaint being made under the Dangerous Dogs Act which could result in the out of control dog being put to sleep through no fault of their own.

Unfortunately, the owner disappeared without a trace, and tracking them down will prove difficult. I just hope that they realise the seriousness of what happened today, and seek the help they (and their dog) so desperately need.

Please, if your dog is aggressive - seek advice and help from a qualified behaviourist and 𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐀 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃! It may just save the life of your dog and those around them.

Have you ever wondered why your dog can recall perfectly at home, but recall seems to go out of the window when you're taking a walk in the countryside? If you find yourself repeating '𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑒, ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒, 𝑙𝑒𝑡'𝑠 𝑔𝑜, 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒, ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒, 𝑛𝑜𝑤, ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒' with no response from your dog, chances are it's down to one of the '3 D's' of dog training!

With recall, it's most likely 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 or 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (or a combination of the two).

The great outdoors is far more enticing than our homes and gardens. There may be other dogs around, pee-mails to check (and reply to!) or fox poop to sniff.

Our dogs may also have more opportunity to get further away from us on a country walk or at a park. They may be ok recalling from a few feet away at home, but that doesn't necessarily translate to 20 feet in a field!

So, what can we do to help?

The key is in '𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑔' new behaviours. This means that we go back a few steps in the training in each new environment, and work on increasing one of the three D's at a time.

Using recall as our example, we may walk in areas that are only slightly more distracting each time. If we go from the home to the Quantocks, it would be a big leap in distraction - but if we went from our home to a secure field, we are adding in environmental distractions (smells) but not yet adding in the distractions of other dogs.

Distance can be managed in a similar way. I am a big fan of Long Lines over flexi leads. They offer a greater amount of control and freedom. You can gradually increase the distance, while your dog is safe and secure. Once you are confident in their recall over distance, you can decrease use of the long line - but keep it ready to use in the next level of distracting environment!

The key is to only work on one of the 3 D's at a time - so if we are working in a more distracting environment, we reduce the distance and duration. If we are working on duration, we reduce the distance and distractions, and if we are working on distance we minimise distractions and go for a shorter duration.

𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐔𝐍!

You don't need to schedule in long, boring sessions. It's not endless repetitions of the same thing. Dog training is no longer about 'obedience' but instead focuses more on the relationship we have with our dogs.

To help build that relationship, and to set them (and you!) up for success, here are my Top Three Tips for training your dog:

🐾 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
Start in a very low distraction environment - a quiet room in your home is ideal! The quieter the better. Your dog needs to learn the skill you are teaching before they practise it outside. Imagine, trying to teach maths to a 5 year old in Disneyland! It would be impossible. When we try to teach a dog to pick up a new skill when there are lovely sniffy smells, other dogs or people around, the level of distraction is going to be too much. Teach the skill at home before taking your dog to Disney!

🐾 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭
Dogs are very much like humans - they learn more quickly (and retain information better) when they are well rested and not over-worked. By training little and often (five minutes at a time is ideal!) you are more likely to have success than training for 45 minute sessions every day. Also, who has time for that? Fit the sessions into your daily life - how about every time you make a cup of tea, you play a training game as you're waiting for the kettle to boil?

🐾 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧
It's not bribery, it's payment for a job well done! Once the new behaviour happens consistently, you can change to intermittent reinforcement (where a reward is only given some of the time) but at the start of training it's important that we reward often. You can use food rewards (treats), praise, toys or environmental rewards (such as sniffing) - whatever your dog loves the most!

People often ask me how can they stop their dogs f

People often ask me how can they stop their dogs from doing certain things - like jumping up, or pulling on the lead. I completely understand how frustrating it can be when a dog greets people inappropriately, or pulls so hard they almost drag the person walking them off their feet, and I get why I'm asked how they can stop that behaviour.

The solution though isn't in stopping the undesired behaviour. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒆𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒆!

Let's take a look at jumping up - where a dog is asked for an alternative action (like a sit, down, settle or touch) they can't both jump AND perform the action at the same time. They are mutually exclusive behaviours.

When the preferred action is rewarded often (whether with treats, praise or their favourite toy), the preferred behaviour is likely to be repeated more and more, until the undesired action decreases to the point of stopping completely! It really is that simple 😁. It's not an instant fix (there's no such thing!) but with a bit of time, patience and consistency, you will see a lasting change AND a stronger bond with your dog.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I've been thinking a lot about New Year's Resolutions lately, and how they often focus on weight loss (or gain), fitness, giving up habits and are usually solitary.

I don't usually make resolutions, but this year I'm trying something different - I'm making a Resolution with my dog 😆

He gets to come to work with me a lot, which he loves as he gets to see all of his friends, but I'd like for us to spend more quality time together. Just the two of us ❤️ so my resolution is to do that - to have more adventures with him, to have Rucksack Walks, to try out new games or just to sit and watch the world go by.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November... while we've had lots of fireworks over the past few weeks, I expect there will be many more tomorrow!

As I write this, there are fireworks going off, yet Monkey is fast asleep by my side. The techniques I used have helped him feel safe and secure when fireworks go off, and I thought I'd share them with you 😁

🎆 Walk early - and walk on a lead, unless in a secure area. People don't wait until it's dark to let fireworks off, and a scared dog could bolt!

🎆 Close curtains and internal doors at home - this helps muffle the sound. If you have window vents, close these too. It makes a huge difference!

🎆 Put a radio or TV on - at your normal volume. Turning it up loud to 'drown out' the noise may seem like a good thing to do, but this can add to the stress. Classic FM have a fantastic show just for pets on, or Alexa has a 'calming music for dogs' app. Both are very good.

🎆 Stay in with your dog. Grab a cuppa and settle down with a book or Netflix, and snuggle. When fireworks go off, remain calm, acknowledge your dog if they look to you for reassurance, and carry on with your activity as normal. The calmer we are, the calmer they will be.

🎆 If your dog is very stressed by fireworks, you can try Pet Remedy. This is a herbal calming spray, which you can pop on bedding, your clothes, a bandana,and refresh throughout the evening.

🎆 If your dog needs to toilet, go outside with them. If fireworks go off while they are outside, they may be spooked and need bringing back in to calm down. It's good to check all fences and gates are secure too, so they can't get out.

🎆 Brain games and #enrichment toys are good distractions too - and don't need to cost anything! Kibble or some treats (I use @jrpate ) in a box filled with old packing paper is brilliant fun! Or treats sprinkled in a tea towel, rolled up and tied in a knot.

Of course, it's good to get our dogs used to fireworks before firework season - I play firework videos on YouTube randomly throughout the year so Monkey is not stressed by them. It really helps.

This gorgeous boy is the reason I do what I do ❤️❤️❤️

My love of #dogtraining and #dogwalking started years before he came into my life, growing into a passion.

When he arrived, I wanted to spend more time with him (and less time in the office, poring over contracts and legal paperwork 😴).

I made the leap, the huge big scary jump into working for myself. I'm so glad I did 😁. It's been difficult at times, but so rewarding - I love it!

He may be a Richer Dog, but he's the one who has made my life richer in every way. More laughs, more fun, more adventures, more snuggles, more love - and I'm thankful for him every day, more than he can ever know ❤️🐾🐾

Is your puppy a little 'land shark' at the moment? Do they mouth and nip a lot?

Teething can be a tricky and frustrating time for both dogs and humans - but help is at hand 😁

Raw (or even better, frozen!) carrots are fantastic for a teething puppy. The pain of teething is eased as they bite into it, and it's soothed even more if frozen. They are perfect to use when puppy is getting a bit too nippy!

The easing of pain gives a dopamine release too, so puppy begins to associate carrots with feeling good - which is great when it comes to training, as you'll be able to use carrots as a training reward too!

No more expensive teething toys or chews (that are full of nasties like rawhide 😣), just easily available, cheap, healthy and nutritious carrots - which your puppy will love!
