Solo Walks

jack russel, snout, whiskers

Somerset Dog Walking’s Solo walks are ideal for dogs that need one to one attention – whether it’s to work on minor reactivity, socialisation, loose lead walking or recall. Each walk is designed to help your dog reach a standard suitable for our Group walks.

Force-free training

All our training uses positive reinforcement. We are 100% force free. We use body language, treats, praise, clickers and whistles to achieve fantastic results.  We follow modern training methods and are happy to share our techniques. We encourage owners of dogs on our Solo walks to take advantage of our one to one training sessions with us (discounts are available for existing walking clients) so that we can give you the same tools we are using and the training can continue at home. This helps increase the rate of retention.

Initial consultation

Before taking dogs on, we carry out an initial consultation, take a full history and do an initial assessment walk to ascertain suitability. Please note that there are certain behaviours that may not be best addressed through training alone. We are not behaviourists, and if we feel that the issues warrant a different pet professional (or medical attention) we will discuss the options with you.

On (or off) lead?

We test recall of all dogs in a secure way before letting them off their lead. If a dog doesn’t have consistent recall we will walk them on a long line (a lunge rein) and play plenty of recall games with them until we are satisfied they have consistent recall, moving towards an off-lead walk for even more fun!

Pick up and drop off

Solo walks are done from the home, unless there is a suitable space within a short distance or timing permits travel. Your dog is walked for a minimum of 45 minutes, with plenty of shade/water breaks if required. All that training is thirsty work! Your dog is cleaned off after each walk, and checked over for any grass seeds or ticks. We try to avoid muddy areas but it’s not always possible, and dogs always seem to find something smelly to roll in! We wash them off/towel them dry as best as possible but unfortunately cannot do a full groom.

Your dog is then returned home, where we make sure they have water available. After the walk, we send a report detailing what they did on the walk, any information we think you need to be aware of, plus photos from our walks so you can stay connected and see what fun they’ve had!
