Training treats – or just treats – can be so expensive, so why not ditch the packaged versions and make your own? They are so tasty, your Pooch will really thank you for it.

Our current favourite is Sardine Biscuits. These tasty tidbits are made using ingredients you probably have in your store cupboard already, and only take 10 mins of prep, so what are you waiting for?

Step 1

Gather your ingredients – a tin of boneless sardines in oil, 150g of porridge oats and 30g of wholemeal flour and a mixing bowl.

Step 2

Tip the sardines – oil and all – into the bowl and mash with a fork to a fine consistency. Can you see the inquisitive little paw? He can’t wait!

Step 3

Add the flour and rolled oats. Mix well.

Step 4

Add a splash of water and mix to a dough. Add the water a bit at a time – you can always add more, but you can’t take it away!

Step 5

Once the mixture is dough-like, break bits off and make little balls (about 3cm diameter) then flatten with your hands to form circular biscuits. The final shape doesn’t really matter, as long as they are all approximately the same thickness. Of course, you can always roll out the dough and make cute little bone shapes, but that will take time and by now your dog will be really interested in the biscuits (ours certainly was!).

Step 6

Pop the biscuits in the oven at 190deg for approx 20 minutes – or in a halogen oven at 160deg for 15 minutes. Remove, leave to cool, then…

You can freeze the Sardine Biscuits too, so you always have a stock of them ready.
